Is SumUp down right now?

Card reader spinning mid-service? Here's how to check whether SumUp itself is down, how to rule out problems on your end, and how to keep taking orders and payments until it comes back.

    SumUp's official status page

status.sumup.com shows live incident reports for card payments, payouts and the SumUp app, region by region. If there's an active incident, it's them — not you.

    Downdetector

User-reported outage spikes often appear on Downdetector minutes before the official status page updates. A sudden spike in reports means a widespread problem.

    Try a second device

Open the SumUp app on another phone on mobile data. If it works there, the problem is probably your venue's Wi-Fi or router — not SumUp.

Status page is green? It's probably local

Most "SumUp is down" moments in a bar turn out to be one of these four things:

Wi-Fi or router

Restart the router, or switch the phone running the SumUp app to mobile data for a minute. The reader needs its paired phone or tablet to be online.

Bluetooth pairing

Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then reopen the SumUp app. Solo and Air readers occasionally drop the pairing after a firmware update.

Reader battery & restart

Hold the power button for about 10 seconds to fully restart the reader. A low battery causes random disconnects long before it dies completely.

Pending app update

An outdated SumUp app can fail against current servers. Check the App Store or Play Store for a pending update before blaming the network.

Mid-service survival

How to keep serving while SumUp is down

  • Take cash — and record every sale in the till as normal, so your daily close and fiscal records stay correct.
  • Offer Bizum or a bank transfer for larger tables, and note the payment method on the ticket.
  • Keep tabs open and let regulars settle up once the reader is back — better than losing the sale.
  • Retry card payments every 10–15 minutes; many SumUp incidents clear within the hour.

The bigger fix

Your till shouldn't stop when card payments do

If SumUp's till app is also your POS, an outage doesn't just block card payments — orders, kitchen tickets and your sales record stop with it.

brasio is a full restaurant till that uses your existing SumUp reader only for the card payment at the end of the order. When SumUp has a wobble, your floor plan, kitchen printing, tabs and cash sales keep running — one provider having a bad day doesn't stop service.

SumUp outage FAQ

How do I check if SumUp is down?
Open status.sumup.com — SumUp's official status page — and check Downdetector for a spike in user reports. If both look clean, the problem is usually local: venue Wi-Fi, Bluetooth pairing or the reader's battery.
Why is my SumUp card reader not connecting?
The most common causes are venue Wi-Fi problems, a dropped Bluetooth pairing, a low reader battery or an outdated SumUp app. Restart the reader (hold the power button about 10 seconds), toggle Bluetooth off and on, and update the app before assuming a SumUp outage.
Can I still take payments while SumUp is down?
Yes. Take cash, Bizum or a bank transfer, and record every sale in your till as normal so your daily close and fiscal records stay correct. If your POS is separate from SumUp, orders, kitchen tickets and receipts keep working — only the card step waits for the outage to end.
Does brasio stop working if SumUp goes down?
No. brasio uses your SumUp reader only for the card payment at the end of an order. Tables, kitchen tickets, tabs and cash payments keep running during a SumUp outage.
How long do SumUp outages usually last?
Most incidents listed on SumUp's status page are resolved within a few hours, and many card-payment blips clear in under an hour. Check status.sumup.com for live updates on the affected service and region, and retry the reader every 10–15 minutes.
